PR V-4 is the fourth generation motor of Prometheus family. It was designed as a test stand motor to safely measure thrust. The combustion chamber and the other features can withstand very high pressures, in case of any unexpected behaviour. A test stand outfitted with a load cell was built specifically to conduct experiments on this motor. The load cell and the data acquisition device (a DATAQ DI-158U) were bought from Aerocon Systems. The motor was designed to achieve a constant thrust curve at full capacity. Some tests revealed an out-of-project, shark-fin-like curve. We tried to investigate and understand this phenomenon, and were able to relate it to grain spacing. The last tests showed a fair repeatability. This allowed us to design new motors meant to fly.
